When you are drawing with the pen tool, you are placing anchor points on the art board. So let’s get started with using the tool to draw straight lines. Note: All of the screen grabs you see here are taken from Adobe Illustrator CS5, but everything you read here is applicable to pretty much every version of Illustrator. I’m breaking this into three easily digestible parts: From my own point of view, I use vector drawing tools for all of my illustration work. By drawing the logo in a program such as Illustrator, using a tool such as the Pen tool, we know that we can provide high quality artwork. A logo may need to appear on a piece of stationery but also on the side of the bus. That’s why graphic designers use vector drawing tools to create logos. We love vectors because they allow us to make our artwork as big, or as small, as we want without losing quality. The Pen tool produces vectors when you draw with it. I’m focusing on how to use Pen tool in Illustrator here, but the concepts are the same in Photoshop. ![]() It certainly can be a frustrating tool to use at the beginning if you’re not quite sure how it work, but with a bit of learnin’ and plenty of practice you’ll find that the Pen tool opens up a whole new world for you. It seems to be one of the tools that people have a go at once or twice, get frustrated and then vow never to touch it. Selecting a region changes the language and/or content on ’ve been teaching both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for several years now, and I can say without doubt, the Pen tool is probably the most feared and avoided tool in both programs. To remove a direction handle as you draw with the Pen tool, so that you can go from a curve to a straight line, click back on the last anchor point created to remove the handle. ![]() Move the pointer over the end of a direction handle, press the Option key (macOS) or Alt key (Windows), and drag the end of the handle to split them. To change the direction of a path while drawing, drag to create a smooth point (a curve). The more you drag when creating or editing anchor point handles, the more curve the path has.Ĭreate corner points (change path direction) To draw a curve when creating an anchor point, drag to create direction handles, and then release. To stop drawing a path without closing it, press the Escape key. To close a path, move the pointer over the original anchor point and, when a circle shows next to the pointer, press the Shift key and click the end point. You can continue clicking and releasing in different areas to create more anchor points for the path. Click and release to create another anchor point. Move the pointer, and you’ll see a preview of the path you are creating. To create straight lines with the Pen tool, click and release to create an anchor point. To start with the Pen tool, select the Pen tool in the Toolbar and, in the Properties panel, set the stroke weight to 1 pt, the color to black, and the fill to none. With it, you can create and edit anchor points and paths. The Pen tool, found in the Toolbar, is one of the most powerful drawing tools in Illustrator.
